Never Eat Based on App Identification Alone
FunGuyAI is for educational and informational purposes only. AI identification can be incorrect. Never consume any wild mushroom based solely on an app's suggestion. Always verify with an expert mycologist before eating any foraged fungi. Some species are deadly even in small amounts.
How accurate is the identification?
FunGuyAI uses Google Gemini AI, which achieves solid general accuracy on common species. However, accuracy decreases for rare species, immature specimens, and poor-quality photos. Always treat any AI identification as a starting point, not a definitive answer.
Why does the app need my location?
Location is optional but improves accuracy. Many mushroom species are geographically bounded — knowing your region helps filter iNaturalist and Mushroom Observer sightings to matches near you, making identification more relevant.
What photo quality gives the best results?
For best results: photograph the cap (top), gills or pores (underside), and stem. Include a mushroom in natural lighting on its natural substrate. Multiple angles submitted as one crop helps. Avoid blurry or heavily shadowed photos.
Is my photo stored or shared?
Photos are sent to our backend for AI analysis and are not stored on our servers. The image data is passed directly to the AI model and discarded after the response is returned. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Does the app work offline?
No. FunGuyAI requires an internet connection to communicate with the AI model and to fetch sighting data from iNaturalist and Mushroom Observer. Offline identification is not currently supported.
How do I report incorrect identifications?
Use the contact form below and select "Incorrect Identification" as the subject. Please include a description of the expected species, your location, and the photo if possible. Your feedback helps us improve the service.
Which platforms is FunGuyAI available on?
FunGuyAI is currently available on iOS (iPhone). An Android version is in development.
